Colbert on immigration: "My great-grandfather, traveled 4,000 miles across the Atlantic . . . and did it because . . ."
For the record, MY great-grandfather didn't kill anyone in Ireland. . . He just stole a few horses from his Colonial landlord who, coincidentally, was found with his skull crushed into the side of a dry-stone hedge in Co. Cork. sláinte, cl
My G-G-Grandmother's Irish family collected together enough money to send only her to the USA. She traveled by ship to Panama, walked across the isthmus to the Pacific side, took another ship to San Francisco. There she found work -what type of work I don't know- and earned enough to bring some siblings over, who together earned enough to bring most of the family.
A real heroine. I wish I knew more about her life, but, alas, the Family "didn't talk about her". Sad.
I bet a lot of the fear and hate of immigrants is the un-admitted knowledge that they are willing to work 10-times harder than Homeland-born Americans, and will probably do better in the long run. "Unfair competition!"

Stephen ... you've changed! For the better, of course, but it's such a ... surprise.
