A Dick Dale Friday

Tom Waits called in sick (his voice did sound odd -- just like Mario Lanza now that I think about it -- but just between us, I think he was faking.) Meanwhile he sent along this new kid -- Dick Dale -- to cover his shift today.

And I don't know about you, but one of the things that gets me through the cold, dark solsticity of this time of the year is the knowledge that, somewhere, dogs are surfing.

Well that and the knowledge that somewhere libidinous pagan lasses are whooping it up in grand style even though they somehow forgot to invite me. Again.

And now, back to the world of work...

You'll have to forgive my early onset dementia, I paid good money for it after all.
Many is the time I can't remember the names of people I have known for years and years, I just get a big blank.
I get to meet new friends all the time.
Such is the case here, I know Dick Dale is Rock and Roll, it just escapes me at the moment.

I happened across this picture and was struck by the resemblence to soon to be former Time contributor, PNAC member and all-around warmongering asshole W. TB. Kristol

Nice to see he's found holiday work.

Someday I'll get the whole link posting dealie, for now it's cut and paste...

The look of smug, insane superiority on this face might lend to the perception....

Not you, Drift; I was talking to bustednuckles.

Busted: Dick Dale is famous for pretty much inventing the surf guitar sound. He has a decent Web site of his own here:

one of the coolest things about dick dale is the way he tells kids starting out in music to not sell out to the labels. to own their own production. he shows them step, by step, how to get their own stuff recorded and then burn their own cd's to sell off the bandstands where they gig.

he's one of the definers of cool.

Ho Ho Ho
D'oH!

Stevie Ray, and Dick Dale, with an Afro.

Gotta luvvs DD (aka teh Fire Starter) for playing it upside down and southpaw'd, delivering whitehott thunderbolts of molten shred!

Meanwhile - it is understandable if one needs 'two wetsuits' to withstand the surf this time of year. brrrr..

I'll be staying by the fire with my lil grrly, sippin Nogg, and diggin Antonia Carlos Jobim, cuz it's nappy time. :-)

skunqesh: Thanks for that Youtube, it's a beaut! It looks like Dick Dale stole Gary Glitter's hair.

Sure, us grey beards remember Dick Dale. Being way out in Washington state, we didn't hear much "surf music" till the Beach Boys came along. I was diggin' Link Wray, and some of the old hot-rod songs. While California guys were savin their money for a woodie, I wanted nothing more than a flat-black primered 49 Merc...Thanks Drift-man, that guy is a guitar wizard!
