So far the GOP's entire approach to winning over all the constituencies they so badly fucked over in the 2012 election amounts to telling better lies.
Which is not a surprise.
Back in 1974, there was one contingent of the GOP that was horrified that Richard Nixon -- their President -- had engaged in spying and blackmail and extortion (Representative Lawrence Joseph Hogan, [R-Maryland, 5th District] in 1974):
"The thing that's so appalling to me is that the President, when this whole idea was suggested to him, didn't, in righteous indignation, rise up and say, 'Get out of here, you're in the office of the President of the United States. How can you talk about blackmail and bribery and keeping witnesses silent? This is the presidency of the United States.' But my President didn't do that. He sat there and he worked and worked to try to cover this thing up so it wouldn't come to light."
There was another contingent -- the Pat Buchanan contingent -- who have always believed that their Party is above the law; that whatever a President does -- whatever their President does -- is legal, moral and righteous by definition and the only problem with Watergate was that Nixon did not burn the tapes.
Guess which contingent won?

40 years after the maggot-sack of Nixon's treason, criminality and seething contempt for the Constitution spilled out into the open, scuttlefish like Representative Rohrabacher still absolutely believe that Richard Nixon was one of nature's noblemen who did nothing wrong and was cruelly done in by cabal of commies in the Congress and the Liberal media.
And they're still furious about it.

Maybe this is a dumb question: isn't the claim that the President has lied to the country, when he in fact has NOT, an example of slander?

I think part of the problem, keeping in mind that the basis of conservative mental self-defense is projection, is that they believe with all their hearts that others do *exactly* what they would do.
On one hand, that means that when some incompetence or maleficence occurs, it *must* be "them" and not "us". Two wars were botched and the economy tanked, and somehow Pres. Obama signed Tarp and the bailouts in 2007.
On the other hand, the craven, bigoted, superstitious, ignorant old white shoutycracker men *are* terrified that the women and brown people and immigrants and gays and Jews and Muslims and college-educated all *are* going to treat them *exactly* as badly as the whites in power treated or tried to treat everyone else. They are authoritarians. They simply think that's how power works.

Another oft-repeated big lie is that Watergate was "simply a cover up of a third-rate burglary".
Fuck 'em. They'll see the light when their flame goes out, smothered by a blanket of reality and facts and logic.
They won't like it, but it will be for their own good.
