The reason there aren't any reasonable conservatives to debate with is not because of a hostile takeover by crazies. It's because the ideology of conservatism has been permanently defeated.
Someone try to name a single position/belief that is:
1) fundamentally important to the nation
2) conservative (in that most liberals would disagree with it)
3) not guaranteed to be false
No such position exists. But flip-flop the words "conservative" and "liberal" in the above and we'd have a list a mile long.
