9.11.10

Another thing we remember?

The single-minded, breathtaking, predatory speed with which Conservatives moved to make sure we all knew who America's real enemies were (From FAIR with a h/t to Atrios for ringing the memory bell):

"Domestic political dissent is immoral without a prior statement of national solidarity, a choosing of sides." -- New Republic editor Peter Beinart, 9/24/01

"The middle part of the country--the great red zone that voted for Bush--is clearly ready for war. The decadent left in its enclaves on the coasts is not dead--and may well mount a fifth column." -- Andrew Sullivan, London Sunday Times, 9/16/01

"Why are we sending aircraft carriers halfway around the world to look for enemies, when our nation's worst enemies--communists proclaiming an anti-American jihad--will be right there in front of the Washington Monument on Saturday?" -- Washington Times columnist Robert Stacy McCain, 9/27/01

"The blood of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and tens of thousands of Americans is on the hands of the antiwar activists who prolonged the struggle and gave victory to the communists...this country was too tolerant toward the treason of its enemies within." -- David Horowitz, L.A. Times, 9/28/01

"...the anti-globalist rioters seek to intimidate world capitalism into shutting down altogether, and the distance between breaking the windows of McDonald's to achieve that end and blowing up the World Trade Center is pretty damned narrow." -- Columnist Steven Schwartz, New York Post, 9/12/01

It is worth noting that, nine years later, as far as I can tell no Conservative anywhere has ever lost a job by spewing mob-inciting, demagogic lies.

In fact, quite the opposite.

Lost in the somber remembrance is that we've been here before America.
Bad days for us, for our country, for the world. Nov 22, 1963.
April 4, 1968. June 5, 1968. January 28, 1986. April 19, 1995. April 20, 1999. National strength lies not in the ability to recall, with laser like precision tinged with unquenchable desire for vengeance. It comes from the ability to recover, move forward, reflect, grow, learn and be more intelligent, caring, concerned, about who we are and who we can and should care for and look after, all the time - not when its convenient, or easy.

If you can't tell I'm:
1) impulsive
2) drunk
3) big fan wish of the podcast
4) wish I could help more
5) but I'm unemployed too.

I have this vision that you and bluegal get down to dire circumstances, then get maried like KH

and HB at the end of The African Queen. Kind of like your own gift of the magi, women love that

stuff, even though...just the chance to pretend for a minute, you know?

For what it's worth, Pam Gellar's No Ground Zero Mosque rally got 1500, but the counter-rally drew 2000, says MSNBC. The only A-list wingnut to show up in person was Dutch rabble-rousing politician Geert Wilders, and he talked way too long. Meanwhile, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck held a "rally" at $65 a head, drawing maybe 150 tops. Even if it was 300 as claimed, that's at most $20,000 at the gate, which seems small potatoes for either Beck or Palin.

Thanks Drifty for reminding us. And let's not forget exactly how many of those right-wing, America F*ck Yeah wingnuts ran down to the recruiting center to join up for their generation's war.

This guy did. Turns out he was a DFH too. So did these patriots (some sixty pages of them!).

The wingnut, "America-F-Yeah" types? They did not.

I'm pretty sure that David Horowitz was one of those anti-war activists.

Thank you bjacques: that photo should have a huge distribution across the Tubes!

There is SO MUCH that our country could do if we wanted to, if we tried. But the people in power don't want to accomplish anything at all, other than making more and more money and garnering more and more power... but power for what? Grabbing more money? It doesn't make sense. But I suppose I'm being sophomoric.

I'm reminded of the title of a movie "Dead Heat On A Merry-Go-Round". So-so movie, but an excellent title. Makes me think of our "Elite", and their professed goals.

What I remember about 9/11 was hearing all of those real-time televised honkin' huge explosions at "Ground Zero" that everyone seemed to somehow magically officially UNremember by the end of the month. That they (along with the putative explosives that made them) fell down the Memory Hole puzzles me to this day, since AQ's normal means of striking has always been with bombs, not hijacks.

I also remember the FBI openly admitting they'd have to try to pop Osama for one of the 2000-2001 embassy bombings & not 9/11 to put him away - because otherwise no trial without Roo as presiding judge & Tigger & Pooh for lawyers will ever be able to avoid handing him a not-guilty verdict.

I also remember how the families of the dead had their attempt at a real, open, thorough, results-oriented investigation crushed like an ant under a tsunami of stonewalling that lasted more than a solid fucking year on end, while the vast majority of evidence either went cold or was casually destroyed en masse ... & how conveniently a pack of histrionic orb-pimping x-files-wannabe hucksters later popped up & smothered the potential resurgence of that issue. I suspect that those families have by now absorbed a lesson in modern American civics that they will NEVER FORGET.

I prefer the second grader's response to those from Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the belligerent, McCarthyist idiots and scumbags in the war porn chorus.
