We’re not doomed.

So sit down, grab an oar and shut up.

Yes, before there was Agent Smith, there was Dr. Smith. The perpetually whining “We’re doooomed”, “We’ll never make it”, “It’s all hopeless”, Dr. Smith.

Of course, I’m sure you “Lost in Space” geeks all remember that Dr. Smith started out as a saboteur. A bomb-planting paid agent of “The Reds.” A fifth columnist stranded on the ship by accident who worked tirelessly, nibbling cancerously from within, counseling defeat and failure when Plan A failed to destroy the Jupiter II outright.

Until it devolved into the Will Robinson, Robot and Dr. Smith Comedy Half Hour (and don't think for a minute that Guy Williams or June Lockhart were anything but highly pissed off at the new arrangement.)

When I hear a weary fellow traveler tired of the long road, in my own small way, I try to offer a little comfort and a laugh. I'm sure you do the same: the knowledge that we are not alone is a powerful, healing and revivifying thing.

But when I hear someone adamantly advising lay-down-and-die-ism, I cannot help but think of Dr. Smith.

I have to ask myself, why are you practically watering-at-the-mouth eager to get others to give up and give in? Who but an enemy ever whispers in your ear that you should slip the barrel of the revolver into your mouth and pull the trigger?

This comes by way of a terrific little chat people were having in one of the comments section over the nature and future of politics in and out of the party system.

(Side note: I am a lucky guy in some ways, and one that’s prominent every single day is the level and thoughtfulness of comments that I receive, and the degree of serious engagement ideas get “below decks”. Some very sharp people come around here and talk some very interesting talk, and you have no idea how much I appreciate it; how much I simply love sitting back and learning new things, or having old concepts everted and re-examined.

I don’t say “Thanks” often enough for that, so thank you. End maudlin side note)

I’m a strong believer in holding my own Party to account, in the same way I’m strongly in favor of setting a broken ankle...after you first take care of the massive chest wound that’s gouting arterial blood in great, huge arcs in every direction.

People that don’t know how to triage problems piss me off, and people that insist on shooting the bottom out of the lifeboat are nothing but reckless.

However, it is a balancing act, no doubt about it. How do you shotgun marry idealism with the dirty realities of politics and not run screaming for the exit? Except there is no exit, and there is no Eden, and no Prefect Candidate is going to descend from a Spielberg Cloud Effects Heaven and save us from our own dumbassery.

Sorry, but it’s just you & me, kiddo, and a whole bunch of crazies on one side, and quite a number of children on the other who are going to stomp off in a huff (a bio-diesel or hybrid Huff one might suspect) if they don’t get Utopia Right Now. So given those constraints, how do you, as Harlan Ellison described writing for teevee, climb the mile-high mountain of shit to pick a perfect rose from the summit and still retain your sense of smell?

Well, for starters, the Kerensky Government was a fascinating mess, but consider what replaced it.

The Weimar Republic became an unmanageable joke, but what civilized person would not wish it back into ailing, doddering existence if it meant that the world would be spared the Third Reich.

To choose between Good and Evil is child’s play; it’s choosing between the lesser of two evils – and knowing that you’ll have to pour an ocean of sweat over the course of generations into the your choice in order to force it to begin to live up to your ideals – that’s the real game. A game for grownups.

So we’re talking of such things (like we do) and commentator Malacandra (whose profile links to this site) summed up my own position so very well that I thought I’d bring those comments topside for a little more attention.

stealthbadger's sets up a condition:
When I see people like Wellstone in office again, then I'll believe we're getting somewhere.

I think that's a completely acceptable indication that hard work is paying off.

But first comes the hard work.

I'm just as critical as anyone else who complains that the Democratic Party hasn't done enough to distinguish itself from the Republicans, by and large.

This presents a number of options:

1) Despair that both parties suck and give up.
2) Despair that both parties suck, but since one sucks marginally less than the other, support it.
3) Despair that both parties suck and try to start a third party.
4) Wait until, by act of Divine Grace, some messianic candidate will appear who will fix things.
5) Work with others who feel as you do to gain control over one of the parties.

Since I started paying attention, in the mid-seventies, progressives have mostly been bouncing back and forth between choices 1, 2, 3 and 4.... while the right-wingers chose Door Number 5.

Here's the thing about these options, respectively:

1) Giving up means that your opponent has won. Not an option, given our opponent.

2) This works fine, assuming can resign yourself to electing people who suck marginally more or less than one another.

3) This is doomed to failure for a number of reasons. In a winner-take-all system, third party candidates are spoilers at best. And the voting reforms needed to change the winner-take-all nature of national politics won't happen: The bloated, inertial bodies of the Democratic & Republican party will stand together in concert to impede the way of the establishment of any 'progressive' party.

4) Messiahs get crucified. (c.f. The Dean Scream, Gary Hart, RFK, and an endless array of others ) If we’re to take our country back, it isn’t going to be because some great political giant will come along and make the Bad Men Go Away: if there isn’t sufficient ground work, even a giant can be brought down by an army of Lilliputians. To effect political change, you need a bunch of people who can give air cover and ground support to even the most exemplary of leaders. Especially them.

5) This is the strategy that worked for the right-wing loonies who blight our nation... back when they found themselves in a similar fix to the one we're in now. The media was against them. They didn't have the presidency, the house or the senate. For them, 1964 was like our 2004. You know how crazy the media made Dean seem to the Man in the Street? That was Barry Goldwater 40 years ago: "In your guts, you know he's nuts". So what did they do? They took the long view and decided that a Republican Party without much going for it was the perfect Host Organism for them. Why start from scratch when there's an organization with a national presence that one can take control of?

If I'm reading driftglass right, he's saying that if you don't like these Democrats, then it's time to raise us up a whole new crop. But to do that, we have to plant seeds, water them, fertilize them, and not just stand around waiting to see if this year the crops look better than the field we left fallow last year.

On a personal level, because I don't like a whole lot of the Democrats we've got now, I'm trying to become the kind of Democrat I want to see more of. It's an inside job.

I think we’ve got to look to each other, starting on the local level, in our communities... to build a political climate in which we rise up through the ranks... supporting each other with time and money... and increasingly occupy positions of influence and authority in order to institute the changes we desire and desperately need.

If you think that'll take time, you're absolutely right. There's no time to waste.

But if anyone has got a better alternative, I'd love to hear the plan.

My reply...

Right on the money. I'll do fury and sadness (and some naughty stuff that I'll blog about one day), but I don't do despair. Counciling "We're all doooomed" is easy and lazy and let's people off the hook. Vast, untraceable conspiracy is to the cynical-to-the-point-of-useless Left what the Rapture is the the Right: the final act of a story already written.

Churchill faced odds a hundred orders of magnitude worse. So did Washington. So did Lincoln.

This is a fight, but it is a winnable fight, and those who say "Shit this is heavy!" and then thow their shoulder into it because the cause is worth the pain are our heroes.

Damned right it's heavy. So what?

But those who say that the fight is over and that we should lay down and die, or that we should spend our passions on useless boutique movements that stand no chance of doing anything are every bit as much of an impediment as anything Rove can throw in our direction.

Well, don't write me off as one of the Dr. Smiths just because I'm disappointed with the current crop of Democrats. I've actually run for state office in a primary just to force a couple of issues onto the table. I know the meaning of fruitless endeavor. Just trying to figure out how to keep myself from doing it again.

Only problem is, the other guys not only don't play by the rules, they make up new ones as they go along, and the Democrats piss and moan and bitch and whine. It's like high school, with money.*

So, are you suggesting we transform the Dems into the neo-GOP? ... Can't win the election? Fix it! Can't get a fair shake in the media? Buy it! ... You think we can win a fair fight when the fix is already in?

I think we need to face the fact that this shit isn't going away anytime soon, and by that, I mean generations (if not longer). I doubt the Bushies and those who follow will give up their death grip on power without one helluva fight (a fight, of course, for which they'll tell us the rules).

The dream really is over, gang, and it's time to shrug off our illusions that the good guys will eventually win, that the truth will prevail. They put us in free speech zones, for chrissakes! And we let them!

I fear that not only will the revolution not be televised, it won't even be started.

But before despair sets in, I'll hoist a "Worst President Ever" poster this Saturday in S.F., knowing that CNN, et al., will hardly mention the thousands of people nationwide who are fucking fed up with the New American Order, knowing that I'll probably get my ass kicked on the way but some numbskull in a wife-beater, and knowing that a year from now, we'll all still be commiserating how truly fucked this country is.

Looks like last throes from here...

darrelplant,
I'm not writing you off :-) I get pissed too. And really sad. I've resigned from particular Dem organizations here over principle and the stupidity with which they were being run, but those are just battles.

The war rages on and it's a marathon, and I'm glad you're still hanging in there.

I know I'm not an army of one,but jesus,it sure the fuck feels like it.I have to drive for literally a couple of hours(due more to traffic clusterfucks rather than distance) one way to find any sort of progressives who are at least dogpaddling like a motherfucker to do something, anything to make an effort in fighting back.

I keep going back and forth,do I just pack up the family truckster(and a big ass moving truck)and leave for the wilds of Canada(or just sell everything and leave the continent period)or do I dig in with everything I have and keep this leetle teeny hope in my head that I could be kinda like Cindy Sheehan and gather some momentum?I love my country, but I've been square in the middle of Domestic Violence and there does come a time where you have to stop taking ass beatings or you'll die. And,most of the time,THE most dangerous moment is when you decide to fight back by exposing the abuser and leaving in one swoop, the violence and intimidation always escalates.I harbor no illusions, lots more people are going to get hurt or worse before things do begin to turn around. This is how Power works,it only flows one way,if that's challenged or shows signs of weakening, those with the Power will resort to anything, nothing is too foul,to keep that Power.

Where I live,I run a REAL risk of physical harm or worse for trying to break out of red state lockstep.I've already taken shit and abuse over a fucking t-shirt,more than once.(I swear there's a factory that makes these guys,it's always the same one.White.Late 20's to early 30's.Drives an SUV or big ass pickup truck.Has either NASCAR,W,Jesus,Republican,Pro War or any combo thereof auto decor on large vehicle.Baseball cap,3 out of the 4 confrontations.Likes to point in my face and puff out chest to intimidate.)

So,for now, sans compadres,I do things, small but well thought out acts,(Edward Abbey coined the phrase "monkeywrenching" I think, which describes my approach much of the time.Abbey, btw is way cool,if you're not familiar with him,he's worth the read, especially now),vote to the best of my informed conscience, and try to talk to individuals but only the ones not frothing at the mouth.Sometimes you get through, most of the time you don't,in my experience at least.

Plus,I'm a mom with an autistic kid.He comes first,I'm his only full time advocate(and trust me he needs one, lol),I can't put my kid in harm's way, this is why I personally hold back and don't stick my neck out farther.I also can't just leave him and devote myself full time to this fight,I have one at home.I NEED other people,I'll admit it,and as a Mother, who is blessed to have such an amazing son,I am torn, because this IS a case where you can't have both, not if you're really gonna throw yourself into the fight.

Sorry Drifty,I could keep going on and on,I'm working it out, sometimes I surprise myself and pull off something brilliant with not alot of effort, other times I feel like anything I do is useless. So I hang on and keep slogging at it.

Still, analysis matters. Same with opposition research. If facts don't match perception, time to rethink.

Twenty years ago, author Walter Karp wrote of the two parties as indispensable enemies of a corrupted system that had destroyed our republic. What we might call a failed state in today's terminology.

So if you're fighting a system to which both parties swear allegiance, you then become their enemy. Hence the need for research (intelligence in warfare speak), and the willingness to fight by your rules, not theirs.

Fight for the joy and dignity of doing so, win or lose, but do so from an informed position. And take personal and group security seriously.

I've despaired, but I get over it because I have to. What I dislike the the most about democrats the most is acting like republicans, especially after a republican win. Holy crap, they only won by a sliver, even with the vote fraud, and most elected democrats roll on their back like puppies and piss all over themselves. I like Dean: he has some good ideas and A BACKBONE. Pity that the domocratic party never gives a guy a second chance. Kerry voted for the Gulf war, and he tries to say he's different! Sometimes you have to take a stand. I know he's different, but not enough to win. Drifty, you run for office & I'll vote for you.

I'm one of the many liberals out here who is disenfranchised with the Democratic party. I, also, don't counsel defeat. In fact, right after the Schmidt/Hackett election early last month, I called for getting more candidates groomed for public office at the grassroots level instead of having to pick from the used models sitting on the lot for decades.

I'm one of those who don't think that Hillary "I'm a Reformed Liberal. Do You Love Me, Now?" Clinton is the answer. Neither is John Kerry and cewrtainly not Joe Biden. And I'll confess, I'm not too crazy (bad choice of words, I knbow) about Howard Dean. Now, John Edwards and Wes Clark... that's a different story. A Clark/Edwards ticket with a real platform would make me cum in my pants.

The system is corrupt. We all know this. And any idealistic candidate elected into office can enter Capitol Hill on a flaming Phaeton and four throwing thunderbolts of righteousness with the True Cross stuck up their ass but when they see that they are but just one of 535 lawmakers and that the real process of change and lawmaking (Don't forget what Clinton said about that: The two things you don't want to see made are sausages and laws) is drawn out, tedious and mired by the quicksand of special interests and graft, you'll actually be able to see the light fade from their narrowing eyes.

I think that both parties will get a jolt in these off-term elections and, in the balance, my thoughts are that the GOP will suffer the most, since they're responsible for virtually all the assclownery in Washington this year. Even a high-ranking administration official told a columnist recently, "We're done for." Is it possible for both parties to suffer in the same election? Sure, if the districts owned for years by one party or the other get so sick of them that they jump ship or simply don't come out to vote and let the other party win by default. The only difference will be which party will suffer the worse come November.

I see the Democrats with a greater capacity to get more grassroots people like Paul Hackett recruited into public service for the sheer reason that we're the ones screaming for a more progressive, pragmatic and responsible government and the fact that there are far more liberal blogs than there are conservative ones. Hell, in short time, Hackett got $400,000 raised through the Internet alone, forcing the GOP to funnel a half a million into Schmidt's campaign. The GOP is still drawing deeply from their bottomless Old Boy well and we're getting wise to their tricks.

But patting eachother on the back as we trudge to the loser's circle after an election, trying to convince ourselves and eachother that a "moral victory" was scored is not going to effect change in this government. It doesn't matter by what margin we lose. A loss is a loss is loss and unless we get some hands on some fucking Bibles we're going to be like that guy in that Bradbury story "The Man," always missing Jesus and salvation by less and less each time.

The way I see it, admitting defeat is not an option. I see my role as bitching everywhere I can. Certainly about Bush (to the newspapers and to do-nothing defeatist friends that don't even bother to vote) but also within the Party, hoping that someone will challenge the career Dems like MBNA Biden and my Rep- Allen Boyd. I think if we can keep the pressure on, we might actually get some real progressives elected. A lot of these guys are getting old and somebody has to replace them.

I'm sorry, I just don't get the despair. I just don't. [it's late, I'm very tired, so if I get any facts wrong, please correct me]

The 2000 election was stolen, end of story. Even so, if Gore could have won his home state or more convincingly in Florida, it'd have been President Gore in January 2001.

2004 was again stolen, but not so obviously and again, it basically came down to a few counties in Ohio.

Yet to hear some of the wailing and lamenting on this and other lefty blogs, you'd think both elections had been clusterfucks of 1972 or 1988 proportions.

Malacandra is right in his/her #3; to think that some great progressive third party is going to happen is foolish, so we're stuck with the Dems.

A lot can happen in 14 months, but the 2006 mid-terms represent a real chance to take back the Senate. If that happens, BushCo. is stopped dead in its tracks. Sure, we'll have gridlock for 2 years but so what? Been there, done that, still here.

2008? Who do the Rethugs have?

Rudy? Hahaha. A pro-baby killer who likes to dress in drag and lives with queers. Bring it on.

Jeb? Hahahahahahaha. Stop, you're killing me here.

Frist? Hahahaha. He'll likely be under indictment/in jail for insider trading.

McCain? Just show that picture of him and Shrub and the birthcake 24/7, taint by association.

Etc. etc. So, to review, doom and gloom is wildly misplaced. Get rid of a few DINO's--yeah, Liberman, I'm looking right at you--tweak a few things and it'll be 1992 all over again.

Anonymous said...

uh, Henry: I laughed, too -- in 1999/2000 -- when the GOP pushed some kid named Bush to the fore... No one's laughing now.

As I said earlier, if you don't think they'll maintain their death grip on power (rigged voting machines or not), you haven't been paying attention...

And I say, if the patient is terminal, keeping him on IV and respiratory is just prolonging the agony.

Screw the Democratic party.

There alreay ARE` "other" non "botique" parties to join, or act in.

Why pretend the dems aren't bought and paid for?

Why try to revive a patient already near death, and unrecoverable?

That isn't defeatism, friend, that is accepting reality.

Sorry, I missed what you were saying. I was away reading the Congressional Green Party Caucus website, the Libertarian Mayors of America newsletter and trying to decide if I should wear the gray pinstripe or the blue double-breasted to the Constitutional Law Party Governor's Ball this year.

Then I had a lovely chat with the late Eugene Debs while I rode on my unicorn to the store.

AAOB:

I can understand your predicament, since you live in GA and all. And I understand is perfectly, even though I live in the blue state of Massachusetts. You'd think we'd be more overrun with liberals than a Gay Pride March in San Francisco.

Uh uh.

The only time I recall meeting up with any like-minded people was when I joined a candlelight vigil for Cindy last month. Then I could talk to a dozen or so of "my kind."

But while it's not exactly that we're overrun with conservatives, it's just that there aren't many people who are as politically aware, let alone politically active, people here. If it interrupts Survivor: New Orleans or Big Brother 18, they don't want any part of it.

Which is a shame, since these idiots running loose on Capitol Hill are making (and, I suspect, erasing) history and altering this nation's destiny.

Hi there, I have come in search of information. I was told that blogs have some of the best and most relevent information for any given subject. Mine happens to be a horse gift website that has anything from jewelry to horse tack.
