Stupid Shit Andrew Sullivan Says

At today's buffet of trifling nonsense from America's most famous gay, Tory, Catholic, True Conservative we learn that Socialism is Communism is Chernobyl!
Chernobyl and Socialism
No, really!
Then there’s the color palette: an endless series of grays and blacks. And the architecture: brutal, concrete, inhuman, vast, ugly, functional. Communism and socialism share this key feature: the lack of color, of variety, of personality, of initiative, and personal pride. But the main undercurrent is fear — fear of the authorities, fear of the KGB, fear of making a mistake, fear of any kind of candor. Everyone is followed and spied upon, including those tasked with following and spying.
Except, on second thought, not really.
Socialism is not communism. Far from it. It can be democratic, fear can be absent, individual freedom profoundly attenuated but still there. But neither is it social democracy: a capitalist system with a solid welfare state that takes care of its people.
Except, on third thought, yes really!
But I wish these millennials and Gen-Zers could have some understanding of what living in a socialist society is like. The texture and mood of Chernobyl gives an exaggerated but real sense of it.
Also unions are bad!
And unions, by their very nature, are collective entities, deploying collective punishment in their ongoing struggle to secure as many resources as they could for their members at the expense of consumers and taxpayers.
All of which is fucking hilarious when you consider that without the vast and well-funded system of Beltway pundit welfare that pays him handsomely to do piffling piece-work like this, Mr. Sullivan would have been dead-ass broke and on the dole decades ago.

Behold, a Tip Jar!

To pile on,

The NRA exists as an tax exempt organization. It has members who pay dues to support the organization to promote their issues.

Religious organisations , tax exempt and collects Tithing (dues) to further their issues.

The Republican party is the same pretense. They do have donors, tax exemptions
collect dues to promote their agenda.

yet, Unions are socialist and naughty. So much so, These other organizations band together to restrict their ability to exist.
For instance; Right to Work laws which allows people to be handed for free all the benefits of what the union provides. Without having to pay for it. Because, their personal beliefs.
Try being a member of any of these organizations without paying their dues (collections) and still receive full membership benefits.

Misguided carve outs for American individuals who believe their right to impose bigotry on others they see as their life long enemies. Who have done nothing to justify any harm they claim is done to them by these perceived enemies.

What about those that want a law carve out to perform lynchings as they did when Trump says America was great?
Do we get to carve outs for Religious sacrifices? I mean, when God talks to someone and tells them to sacrifice their eldest son. I mean who can question God?

maybe Labor Unions need to adopt a religious aura.
Then, a Union president can proclaim God spoke to him and wants him to attain a wage increase in the negotiation with the godless corporation. God wants a raise for the workers.
it is right there in the Bible.
God says to treat your slaves fairly.
This way it is not socialism in the eyes of republicans.
Cab they really argue when God tells a Union leadership to do his will?

Does he realize he's talking about an HBO series, and that the director probably chose the color palate for a reason? He doesn't say what was so terrible about growing up in pre Thatcher England, or even that it was terrible. And the Gen Z and Y (and X) people have had a pretty good taste of what living in late stage capitalism is like. And they want to see what else might be on the menu. The Russian thing? Gah! Of course not. Maybe something Swedish.

I'm glad I never have read any of that guy's stuff. He is missing a few steps between reason and conclusion. He must have jumped at some point in the past. "Sad".

Its not much of any kind of proof but by pure coincidence a friend has been in St Petersburg over the last 8 weeks taking pictures of the modernist architecture, visible on her instagram, including fine examples of Dada and Bauhaus themed mastepieces. Much of which is quite full of spirit, hope, inspiration, is socially disposed, successful, and often beautiful, and even institutionally beautiful.

Im not going to take on a full throated cry to the glory of Soviet grays, but among the other errors on the Sullivan resume is that he thinks drama makes for poetry. The first thing you see wherever you go is the building material, whether it be concrete, sandstone, stucco, mud, wood, or granite. Its what you notice when you see Gaudi. Materials. Then you see the condition and use of the materials. So what? I remember an old friend from the west coast who was a bricklayer, visiting me in Manhattan the first time. All he could talk about for the first few days was the colorful and profuse brick, on and on, look here's more brick, the streets, the walls, the brownstones, something I'd noticed, I suppose, but nothing I would have thought to mention to someone in a letter, for example. Streets are flat and made of stuff.

I do hope that Sullivan realizes that employers often deploy punishment in their ongoing struggle to secure as many resources as they can from workers.
