The Professional Left -- Daley Special

daleymandias
From the Kennedy Upstart to the Kenyan Usurper, the Daley Machine has cast a long and powerful shadow across American political life. Now that R2D2 has announced that he is giving up the Fifth Floor and the orderly universe of the Chicago aristocracy has been thrown into disarray (or is that spelled "Desirée"?), Blue Gal and I thought some of our listeners might want to spend 40 minutes of so just completely geeking out on an up-close, from-the-scene Special Professional Left podcast conversation about how the 21st Century version of that Machine works, and who really runs it.

(Shocking as it may seem, my opinion about Hizzoner's legacy apparently diverges slightly from that of noted New York Times columnist David Brooks --
I don’t know if you’ve covered many politicians who flat out did their job well, but Daley is one of them. So I hope you don’t mind this little gush.
-- who has never met an authoritarian Daddy-figure he didn't love.)

I'm not the last of the old bosses.
I'm the first of the new leaders.

-- Richard Daley the Elder
