On the Subject of Turning Word Verification Off
Since shutting off Blogger word-verification ("captcha"), I have been getting spammed several dozen times a day. In addition to being a huge waste of my time, one of the downsides of this is that while slashing-and-burning my way through the spam comments, I'm pretty sure I have deleted at least one person's legitimate comment (something about "morning coffee" -- yes, I do read every single one of them and enjoy most of them :-) and possibly more than one.
This was inadvertent: as most regular readers know, I believe in keeping comments as open as possible and will let just about anything through that does not involve threats of violence, racist or antisemitic tirades about secret conspiracies, or spam.

So does that mean you're reinstating captcha? Because the "letters" have been getting ever blurrier, to the point where I am guessing most of the time.
In fact, since I have named you (in absentia and in fantasia) the Mike Royko Memorial Chair at the University of Your Choice, you have kind of functioned as my morning coffee since coffee (decaf as well as regular) interferes with my ability to sleep at night.
Happy trails!
Dude, move to motherfucken Wordpress! The Akismet built-in spam filtering is nearly perfect, and no goddamn son of a motherfucken captcha!!
My comment to your "Party of God Outraged" was "It looks like you had your morning coffee!" Snarky, but I share your rant. Thank you for reading your comments.
Try akismet (or whatev)
Thank you, brave sir, for dumping that irritating shit. After three tries of trying to decipher those blurry fucked up things I usually say Fuck It.
Not to be outdone, Blogger makes you sign into your Google account to publish your comment, then demands you add your phone number to your fucking Google account and they can kiss my narrow fucking ass.
Of course, when I deem to skip that little offer, I get an error and my comment disappears.
Rotten motherfuckers.
I'm tellin' ya, Wordpress ain't no picnic and has it's own extremely irritating idiotsynchrosy's but Blogger done went bug shit on the windshield for me.
I agree that Akismet is a great anti-spam tool.
My understanding is that Akismet doesn't work directly with Blogger, although there's a workaround which would require the blog to use the Disqus plugin for comments (replacing Blogger's native comment system) and using an Akismet key with Disqus.
I echo that Akismet is a great spam filter.
For a Blogger site to use Akismet, it'd need use the Disqus plugin which allows you to enter an Akismet key.
But Disqus entirely replaces the Blogger commenting system, so it's not a step to be taken lightly.
If you can implement a Disqus, you'll likely get more traffic, which is a good thing.
Disqus can be buggy at times, but it will allow commentators to see previous comments, whether on this blog, or on other blogs. So when a few of us comment here and on more mainstream blogs/sites, they'll get links to this blog.
Something to think about.
The effort is highly appreciated - thanks.
Just logged into "Pharyngula" and they have 'nucaptcha'.
Just three letters or numbers. Much easier.
and will let just about anything through that does not involve threats of violence, racist or antisemitic tirades about secret conspiracies, or spam.
I want to kill the Middle Eastern bastards who got together and made the minced pork shoulder and ham in my sandwich turn all black!
Does that hit all the buttons?
