Basically it sounds like Matthew was indoctrinated early in life. It is a wonder he broke the indoctrinated chains that bound him.
Was it a sudden burst of critical thinking? How long does it take to be so exposed to realize it is not conservatism. Does not align with morality. God's morality or otherwise. That immorality and corruption , hate and even violence is fine for members of the ideology endeavor.
I grew up a wild animal with little to no adult supervision so independent minded I have become.
I served the military but retained my own limits. Yes, there are orders that should be disobeyed.
I M REFISTERED a democratic voter. I do not consider myself "belonging" to the party.
For some reason it brings me back to an old history question pertaining to the lead up to and the fighting of the Civil War.
Question;
Why did so many southerners so loyally fight and die for the Confederacy?
There was a very small percent of plantation slave owners of wealth. The rest of the white population that wasn't one of them, served them and sold them merchandise to live on. They did rely on this slave wealth but they lived a quality of life that was only a bit better than a slave.
My best deduction is, the poor southerners were sold the promise they too could be a wealthy slave owner and that they were better off than a slave as well.
Of course, there was that indoctrination into the confederacy and a mind stimulus of being superior to other races.

He admits his part in bring us into this right wing drama to force people to be how they say to be.
Disregarding freedom.
It is a good thing he found his way out and is doing things to , for lack of better word, Atoning.
Does he realize his fortune that there remained a place for him to exercise his freedom to leave and be where he is today?
The right has made it clear to me, their agenda is to impose a national conformity forcing all into an imagined robotic institutionalized thing. Like an AI programmed bot. If they were to accomplish their goal. There would be no freedom for alternative to escape.
