Driftglass speaking >>> "There's been no breathing space for us to sort of sit down and relax and go, 'okay, this is all horrible... how do we fix this?' - because the right won't stop doing this. They won't stop fighting. They won't stop being these monstrous assholes that they are. And so there's been no ability in my experience in the last 30 years to have an interval between a catastrophe, the lying about the catastrophe, and then coming to terms with the aftermath of the catastrophe. We just keep rolling through one massive traumatic shock after another after another after another..."

I know exactly what you were talking about with this, and I'm not trying to detract from your original message. I do want to point out that you've also just succinctly summarized the GOP and conservative media playbook for mass shootings.

    10 Mass shooting occurs
20 GOP lies, obfuscates, accuses the other side of playing politics
30 Media willingly plays right along
40 Issue produces no or next to no meaningful action
    50 GOTO 10

I know you know this. Thanks for all you do. Stay safe.

  2. DFB can fuck right off. Morality, from an asshole who pimped the goddamn Iraq war? What, does he think we're stupid? Oh, I used that word again. There's obviously some sort of biological activity occurring above DFB's neckline, but I have yet to see any solid evidence that it has ever risen to the level of thought.
Yeah, I'm tired of Fergus and his circus. And yes, I realize that is part of the so-called strategy, but they have made a serious miscalculation. Kind of the same one DFB always uses. There are things that one must pay attention to, fatigue or no, because they impact one's ability to continue existing. Healthcare? Check.
Democracy? Check. Bodily autonomy? Check. Breathable air and drinkable water? Check. The freedom of one's loved ones? Check. The list goes on. The utter absence of any threat to anything on the list apparently can cause one to stop believing that those threats can exist, or can influence the behavior of those who experience them.
And while I'm happy to see Biden out there reminding folks that if we manage to still be here in a hundred years, the bill he signed one year ago will be the beginning of why, I still firmly believe it's the contents of that list that will win elections. People do vote when they want to, but they vote more when they have to. So says a poor, disabled working class white guy.
Thank you again for the podcast. Hurricane Hilary. In California. We are going to try and get laundry done tomorrow, hopefully before the rains get here.

  3. So...David Brooks' first rightward act: Stealing money from hippies and running from the consequences.
    Sounds pretty on-brand.
