Jeb Bush is ending his campaign for president after a disappointing showing in the South Carolina primary.
"The people of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken, and I really respect their decision," the former Florida governor told his supporters gathered in Columbia on Saturday night. "So tonight, I am suspending my campaign."
"I congratulate my competitors, that are remaining on the island, on their success in a race that has been hard-fought, just as the contest for the presidency should be because it is a tough job," he continued.

Wow -- so it turns out that you can't win a presidential primary by flushing millions of dollars down the toilet. Live and learn, huh?

ReplyDeleteAt some point the billionaires who cheered on the Citizens United ruling is going to realize all they did was make it easier for con artists to rip them off using political campaigns as money pits.
ReplyDeleteIf they ever come to terms with the fact that, gee, regulating political campaigns and creating stronger fraud laws to stop this sort of thing from getting worse, we might actually see some sanity return to politics.

Someone put it rather well by saying Jeb basically lit one hundred million dollars on fire, but that would at least have generated some useful heat and light. Are there any economists out there that could estimate the multiplier effect of one hundred million dollars being injected into the wing nut welfare system? Will any of it go to productive use or at least be subject to taxation? Or does all of it simply get sucked out of the economy and into an off shore tax haven?
