Great show again. I got the 'scribners' question right off, because I remembered this anecdote. (I don't know how true it is).

RAH tried to write 2 books a year, one adult and one juvenile.

He had a handshake deal with the original George Scribner to deliver 1 juvenile a year.

He did this for 19 years, each was accepted.

The twentieth year (George being long retired by this time), his ms was rejected. With a form letter and a comment. Wasn't even signed.

This ticked off RAH so much he quit Scribners and went elsewhere.

    The comment was "too militaristic."

    Starship Troopers.

  2. As a native of Washington DC I don't know which is worst being considered a 'fly over' bumpkin or one of the local 'little people.' Nothing will brighten your perspective like talking to some 24 year old hot shot working on Capital Hill just off a winning campaign trail.

You know having worked in the Chicago government how organizations like that can sit on a local culture. D.C., is many time worst.

'Breaking Away' starts to get at what it's like to grow up in this town.
