The purpose of the Moral Majority was to bring *back* the evangelicals who still felt the sting of the '64 DNC rebuke of George Wallace.

As you both have said, the pulpit was always the first place segregation (and racism and sexism and homophobia) was defended, and racism was then sublimated into dominionism. The Moral Majority simply brought back the cover of religion that the Southern Strategy needed, and to be honest, largely appealed to the same people. The religious aspect simply made for easier fundraising, as people were acclimated to "pass the plate" from religious leaders.

Mike.K.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11363027.post-59996183768895593422013-02-09T01:02:24.238-06:002013-02-09T01:02:24.238-06:00So now, I think, the GOP is ripe for dying, but no...So now, I think, the GOP is ripe for dying, but now the MSM is going to help keep them alive?!?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17420029088809696342noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11363027.post-47719517124320261392013-02-09T00:12:09.148-06:002013-02-09T00:12:09.148-06:00OT, DG, but I have to say ... It is without exception the highlight of my media week (i.e., the most significant, informative, and enjoyable media I consume each week).

But that cat story you guys told today was just beautiful. It brought a tear to my eye. Well, two, actually: first when I heard how your poor old cat was so unhappy and suffering, and then again when I heard about the miraculous turnaround brought about by love and care.

BG said something self-consciously about boring the audience with the story, but on a show full of exceptional moments, that was one of the most exceptionalist. Or whatever. ;-)

Cheers!Jackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01894655800419937862noreply@blogger.com
