Professional Left Podcast #447

“My philosophy of life is that the meek shall inherit nothing but debasement, frustration and ignoble deaths; that there is security in personal strength; that you can fight City Hall and win; that any action is better than no action, even if it's the wrong action; that you never reach glory or self-fulfillment unless you're willing to risk everything, dare anything, put yourself dead on the line every time; and that once one becomes strong or rich or potent or powerful it is the responsibility of the strong to help the weak become strong."
-- Harlan Ellison, writer

OK, one thing, the thing I'm crowing about over and over just now: Yes, the "Tea Party" was a bullshit construct that was dishonest on almost every level you can think of, but there were two things about it that we should be paying attention to right about now.
First, they were not civil. Their shtick was to deliberately gang up on town hall meetings and disrupt them past the point where any actual policy could be discussed.
Second, and the part that matters, they helped win the 2010 midterms.
The Indivisible movement is founded on examining the tactics used in 2009 and 2010, when the goddamn Republicans were out of power like we are now, and trying to adapt them to the upcoming 2018 midterms, and beyond, with the enthusiasm they are creating among previously politically inactive people who can't stand what is actually happening to our country sort of the same way that the marks and rubes in the "tea party" claimed to abhor the socialism of the Kenyan usurper.
They had racism on their side, we have the truth on ours.
And we better get really good at beating them with it with a quickness, because we need to do even better in 2018 than they did in 2010, when they took the house but not the senate.
For us with this year's map, the senate is very nearly impossible, but we need to win it anyway. Lives are hanging in the balance.
I submit that we can do it. We have to try.
Thank you again for the podcast. This has been a brutal week on so many fronts, capped off with the death of a close friend who was traveling in another state and the scramble to try and deal with his belongings and remains before the scavengers in Georgia get to him.
