I got my love of literature from a Northern Californian high-school English teacher (in Eureka, his name was Stephen Miller) who taught a fantasy/satire class like a college lit class. The fantasy half was the Lord of the Rings. Next semester was science fiction, covering the Martian Chronicles, the Illustrated Man, the Science Fiction Hall of Fame Vol II, and Dune. Next semester was Shakespeare, and senior year was European Novel. I would be a different person had my sister failed to talk me into taking his classes as a sophomore. So thank you for your support of another Nor-Cal English teacher, because I know the wonders they can work.

I do think the Republicans will draft Paul Ryan into running for prez at their convention this summer. But I suppose that's kind of like saying "the weather in the Upper Midwest will be unpleasant this April".

Sabbatical Bloody Sabbatical!

One of the reasons for the comparatively rapid evolution of the human brain has to be that the selection pressures coming from the environment include other human brains in a competition for 'mind-share'...
'Privilege' means that, for my white, male 'mind-share' to win out requires of me nothing other than to occupy space - and so is largely invisible to me.

I have sent in my reply to the challenge -- am I disqualified if I am a published professional author? Because I have sold two stories, and been paid money for stories I have posted online, and I'm writing articles for a local alt weekly, so you might need to discard my entry.

Free Harvard/Fair Harvard blah blah blah. Ralph Nader can fuck himself with a concrete dildo for unleashing Bush and his reign of error upon this world. The Alumni Tuition Movement is noble, Nader can help by staying the fuck away from us.
