Even though you only tangentially mentioned the ebola epidemic (and in hopes that "ebolacare" isn't something that our society will be needing soon), I would like to call people's attention to two Slate.com articles about this grim situation that are reality-based and hysteria-free: Ebola is not a weapon by Nicholas G. Evans and Ebola is no measles: That's a good thing by Gerardo Chowell-Puente. There's enough out there to be pessimistic about without making shit up!
