Well, then, God bless America!

One of the things I learned in the Great Ruckus that followed the appearance of Snowden on the international media stage is that there are some people who simply hate America. It's not that they criticize the broad trends of American policy, for I and lots of others do plenty of that, or that they find certain aspects of American history and the way it is presented to be dishonest and distasteful. Nope, they flat out hate America with the burning heat of a thousand suns.

Call me naive, but this comes as a great surprise. I'm as lefty anyone, but aside from a Socialist People's Party delegate I met at Oddense I have never come across any such hater in the flesh. In the fever dreams of the teahadists the America haters are legion; in real life, not so much.

But there is something about the document dump that has driven the haters into a frothy rage and dragged them out into the light. Maybe, someday, they will put aside their tendency to jeering and japery and put forward a statement about what they think they are doing and why they think it's a good idea. I would be interested to learn from them, if they have anything to say.

So Russia is now your benchmark for American democracy and the (mis)treatment of journalists? Good to know. 'Merica fuck yeah!

What a load of self-serving BS.

In my experience Americans and American culture are well-liked by ordinary folk pretty much everywhere.

It's the U.S. government and U.S. imperialism that are deeply hated - usually for good reason.

This blog post, condensed:

"As long as we're not as bad as Russia, we're okey-dokey".

Cold War "Liberalism" lives.

To recall a favorite trope of mine, many of the first-generation neocons started off as Cold War Liberals.

I wonder how many of the War Liberals who post here will be conservatives in the 2020s.

Also, what LL said, However, we should remember that the U. S. govt. would not be doing things to make itself unpopular if it truly represented the people of the USA, rather than the owners of the USA--the 1%, or as Teddy Roosevelt called their predecessors, the Malefactors Of Great Wealth.

But Laura Poitras got annoyed in an airport once, and I'm sure that's never happened to a non-journalist like you or me.

Russia doing what Russia does best -- Killing Russians.

Lumpy Lang and Monster from the Id:

You're both responding to something Driftglass hasn't said: That Russia's perfidy justifies the US's misdeeds. That assumption is something you're projecting onto him; In fact he didn't even mention Snowden's defection. Even money he laid that rake on the ground fully confident that the most compulsive of you would step on it.

For my part I only wonder why acknowledging the shades of grey in the world is such anathema to you guys.

Come on Droneglass.

Just because American journalists aren't gunned down by the government's secret police on the streets in broad daylight doesn't mean that the US Government isn't going to lock Saint Glenneth Greenwald into a supermax hellhole the minute his flight lands.

Because FREEDUMB!

My God...I had heard of a couple of these killings, but I never could have imagined it was this many.

I know some have complained about journalism in the US, but honestly, we've got it great over here.

Thanks for this, Driftglass.
