Good-Bye to All That

Alec Baldwin burns down his blog.

From People:
Alec Baldwin Says He's 'Done' with Public Life

No stranger to voicing his strong opinions, Alec Baldwin is now saying he's had enough – of public life and New York City.

"I've lived this for 30 years, I'm done with it," the actor and former MSNBC host, 55, states in his bylined New York magazine cover story that hit Sunday night.

"I'm aware that it's ironic that I'm making this case in the media," he writes, "but this is the last time I'm going to talk about my personal life in an American publication ever again."

He blames some of the events of 2013, which, he concedes, "was actually a great year, because my wife and I had a baby. But, yeah, everything else was pretty awful."

Baldwin acknowledges 2013 had him challenging accusations of homophobia, which cost him his reputation, his gig on MSNBC (he calls the network "as superfluous, as Fox") and his faith in the media, which he dubs "Hate Incorporated."

"I haven't changed," he insists, "but public life has."

He also slams media personalities Anderson Cooper (the "self-appointed Jack Valenti of gay media culture," says Baldwin; Valenti ran the Motion Picture Association of America, which rated movies for their content) and Rachel Maddow. Baldwin calls her a phony and says she tried to get him fired from MSNBC.

"Now I loathe and despise the media in a way I did not think possible," he says. "Paparazzi today are part of a network that includes the Huffington Post and, much to my dismay, even NBC News, in their reliance on tabloid reporting."
...
So long, Alec.
We'll always have 30 Rock:
Predictably, Mr. Sullivan does his little end-zone dance, celebrating the public exit of virtually the only Liberal whose existence Mr. Sullivan would ever acknowledge...

...in post after post after vitriolic post.

Baldwin contributed a lot of self deprecating humor to 30 Rock.
I remember a really funny bit where his character talked about how an actor moving from film to television was committing career suicide.
In typical gutless fashion (ask Donahue) MSNBC dropped him like a rock.
The remarks he made in a heated situation were nothing that could not have been recorded around any water cooler down the block at FOX News headquarters. I doubt a day passes where O'Reilly doesn't refer to someone as a cock sucker.
On the good side, his absence will rob the right of very large public target.
....but I doubt he will be gone forever, despite his bridge burning.
Southpark will be back on in a few weeks, and despite whatever disgusting filth Ted Nugent spews out between now and then, they will probably devote and entire episode to crucifying Baldwin.
He allowed himself to become a caricature. At his age, he should know better.

Amen, Alec. I hope he continues to act. I loved him in 30 Rock.

Was 30 Rock funny? I never got around to it. That Tina broad, god bless her, tried real hard on SNL, but never clicked. And Alec Baldwin? He did that sweaty balls thing, right? That was, I've heard, supposed to be funny, even hilarious. No loss, I guess. But kudos to AB for figuring out, finally, how bland a town is NYC.

Andrew Sullivan's naked double standard regarding Alec Baldwin and the Duck Dynasty guys is pretty fucking frustrating. While I have nothing against anyone who writes off Alec Baldwin on principle, Sullivan gives good indication that the only principle he is adhering to is a loathing of frat-boy urban liberals. If he were at least honest about it, I could probably swallow it, but if Sullivan were that honest about his motives his own market value would probably drop.
