The Icksorcist

The Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler of an Iron Age cult which operates near my home has vowed to perform a meaningless ritual to make Teh Icky Gays go away.

Inexplicably this has generated headlines all over the country.

From the Chicago Tribune:
Springfield bishop to perform 'exorcism' on day same-sex marriage becomes law

By Manya Brachear Pashman Tribune reporter 7:00 p.m. CST, November 14, 2013

Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield said he will offer prayers for “exorcism in reparation for the sin of same-sex marriage” at the same time Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign the same-sex marriage bill next week.

Paprocki said he will offer the prayers intended to cast out evil at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the state’s capital Wednesday.

“It is scandalous that so many Catholic politicians are responsible for enabling the passage of this legislation and even twisting the words of the pope to rationalize their actions despite the clear teaching of the church,” Paprocki said in a statement.
...
In the Year of Our Lord 2013, the local Catholic emissary of the Prince of Peace has scheduled a public exorcism just to remind gays how very much he hates them.

Yeah.  I'm sure that'll do the trick.

What I have noticed over the 40 years of my life is that there is a large swath of people for whom the only, and I mean *ONLY*, function of "religion" (and religion = Christianity to most people, but that's another rant) is a crutch to support their bigotries, in particular homophobia.

I have encountered a great many people who are overall non-religious. They don't go to Church. They *might* own a Bible. They get annoyed when someone uses Scripture to criticize *them*. They don't even have church weddings. I have even heard these people say it's a badly translated book. However, the moment someone mentions Teh Gay, they scowl and say, "Even THE BIBLE says it's wrong!".

I have crossed paths with more "only Christian against Teh Gay" people than I can count. Most will only mention the Bible against gay people. Some will also refer to it about women knowing their place.

Basically, when they don't want to feel bat that they are assholes.

I think this is the people who that bishop is targeting. I think he is weighing the cost of telling the gays "you're icky" against the benefit of telling unthinking people "you don't have to feel bad for thinking they are icky, now let's pass the plate!". He hopes to get more congregants than he looses.

The kindest thing which can be said of "Christian" LGBT-bashers is:

"Father, forgive them; they know not what they do".

I kinda get the impression from this new Pope guy that he might not be cool with that sort of thing.
