Good afternoon, Mr. Glass.

Yep, it's quite amusing how many lines you can apply from that movie...

"And in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn't fully understand."

"It's not about the money. It's about sending a message."

"Some men aren't looking for anything logical."

Enjoy your day.

The GOP really shit the bed this time, didn't they? There is so much delicious schadenfreude to dine upon, I'm not even sure where to start.

Oh, how about this comment from a commenter on Booman's blog: "All the wingnuts at my office are suddenly not interested in politics."

Haha, great quote from Booman's blog, Nonny... :-D

Great Photoshop, too.

Another good fit are the Mel Gibson rants. Bellowing so loud he can barely breathe he belts out "I will burn the house down. But first you will BLLLOOOWWW MMMMEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!" That's the tea party right there.

Not fair! Ted Cruz had a plan and it worked fantastically.

He raised 1.9 million dollars this quarter and won the values voter straw poll. If the issue comes up in the Republican primary he can say this fiasco didn't work because the other Republicans were squishes and Obama knew they would blink.

This wasn't good for the country, it wasn't good for the government, it wasn't good for politics, and it wasn't good for the Republicans. However it was very good for Ted Cruz.

Hmmm. Disturbingly accurate comment, Geese.

I wonder if John Boener can be sued by the federal government for the damage done to our credit rating, for the damage done to our economy and the damage done to individual who were laid off due to the shutdown?

@Geese,

Ted also got a list of people who were big enough suckers to give him money for his role in this fiasco. That is a gift that keeps on giving.

@Jack

Yeah, I don't get all the cheering by liberals about this outcome. Here's what it sounds like here in DC talking to David Brooks type Republicans.

-The government was reduced to essential staff and the world didn't catch on fire. Sure there was some pain, but it mostly happened to the sort of "non-persons" that nobody of any influence in either party gives a fuck about. Thus an argument can be made that we can shrink staffing and budgets, save the people some money, cut some taxes, and things will still work at an acceptable level.

-The things that didn't work can be privatized or fixed by... reducing government. IE the WW2 memorial being closed, well that took people to close it. If we just left the memorials open and didn't bother to staff them with police it would have been fine (on a personal note there is some fucking logic to this living in DC, but I'm sure people would be screaming for the cops to eject the hobos soon after). When it comes to the national parks, they either offer the same logic with a side of "if some idiot gets lost/hurt on their own out there it's on them" and a huge dose of "if we privatized all of this they wouldn't have shut down". tossed out as well.

-Just as the sequester didn't kill us all, neither did this. So it looks like more "doom and gloom" but not much actual fire and lightning. In a few months, like the sequester, it will look like a big nothing. Plus there will be other issues rolling into 2014 and 2016, so any damage done to the Republican party will be minimal and gone by then.

These guys aren't true believers, they're upper income, overly educated, DC/NOVA types. Where a liberal is "let the gays get married and then cut social security" a conservative is "cut social security and then get married" and a centrist is "cut social security while the gays get married". Everyone agrees what to do, they just don't agree on the order to do it in.

What did piss people off here was intelligence, DOD, and International AID being impacted. They also hate that we didn't get a grand bargain on cutting entitlements, broadening the tax base, and closing loopholes. Believe it or not free education and medical care to other countries is rather popular (white guilt for Western Civilization driving one group, empire lust from the other), but doing it in this country goes out the window once you start giving money that could go to NY to people in flyover.

That's the view of the situation in DC by people who aren't screaming on the teevee.

This did some damage to Republicans and some to Cruz, but when you look deeper it wasn't all that bad. Plus some people, Cruz, just milked the fuck out of it.

DESPAIR DESPAIR DESPAIR

DG's right again - those who peddle nihilism and despair never tire. Gotta make sure we can't truly win. Every win just means a hundred losses, you know, and until we reach Utopia we're screwed.

Ach du lieber, Augustin, alles ist hin.

@Geese
Maybe you didn't get this news but I assure you a *lot* of people were pissed about the NPS units being closed and unstaffed during the shutdown and the sequester does did hurt them, too.

@Anon

Were those people in a major city on the coasts, if not they are not people, and thus nobody making decisions gives one fuck what they think.

Where you are born and were you live describes your worth in this nation. From a major blue city, congrats, not from one... starve.

You're never going to convince people who count that some fuck from Kansas is worth more than a used piece of tissue.

If those people are New Yorkers, let's here it, if not, why the fuck should I care?

I'm kinda doubtful that "David Brooks type Republicans" are who Geese talks to and not just Geese himself.

Yeah, I never see any hippies out here. And if I did, it wouldn't matter. Except if I needed something to punch, or something. I'm not really sure what his "DC and NY are the only real places so fuck you" schtick is actually about.

OBS,

Geese is doing two things: bragging and illuminating a little window into the thought process of DC. He is doing both quite deliberately and not entirely out of malice.
