A Business of Words

In this ad, Nissan defines the horrors of enforced conformity so far down that it now means well-fed, attractive white men being forced to wear $1,200 suits and drive a Mercedes.

You're different of course.

You think for yourself.

You will certainly escape this Neiman-Marcus dystopia.

In a Lexus.

Which will get you safely past all the scary robots that are trying give you a Mercedes.

Well, then I am screwed. I have no budget for a new car, let alone a Lexus.

I doubt that this commercial is aimed at me. Funny how the auto industry is terrified that the coming generations seem to be losing interest in their product.

I don't have a car but all my suits cost well over 3k? Not stock, but once the cloth is cut and the tailoring is done.

I had a motorcycle but the 300 a month for a parking spot in my apartment complex and add another 300 a month for one in my office was fucking nuts. My rent is already well over 2k a month for a studio apartment.

I bring this up to make a point... in some areas the cost of living is so insanely high that the entire Lexus vs Toyota debate is worthless. I work off K street and live in NOVA on the Potomac, 65k a year is "poor" here, and barely able to get by.

I'm not bitching, but some of my old military buddies went home to places like bumble fuck Georgia and live like kings off 45k, 45k wouldn't even cover cost of living where I am. One of them bought an amazing house for under 250k, I'm looking to buy a condo for 850k and that's a fucking steal here, it's a studio. I wouldn't be able to afford it was it not for veterans loans and other stuff I qualify for.

I don't think most of the nation is aware that commercials are really targeted at the NYC, DC, SanFran crowd. There's a reason Obama is going for chained CPI, and Schumer and Pelosi freaked out about tax cuts on sub one million bucks a year income expiring. We are the elite, we are the liberal elite. We have no use for the old New Deal Democratic mess, we joined for the social issues and the price the rest of you will pay for our votes and cash is neoliberal economics. Populist is as dirty and nasty as a word as racist in these areas. Our break with Obama will come if he doesn't slash social security.

The commercial works. I won't buy American products, especially those made in the South. American labor sucks, the South sucks, and driving or wearing American looks really bad at the meetings I have to attend. Asian is better than German, for various reasons. Italian is OK for suits, Swiss is OK for a watch. But in general educated liberals do not buy American or western products, it degrades our class and city.

One of the funniest DC gripes about Obama is he wears a Tag for his watch. Granted Tag makes some watches in the 20k range, but for the most part they sell cheap quartz movements to middle managers that cost a meager 2-5k. IE, the brand is for trash. So is Rolex. Grande Seiko's in the 30k range or PP's that cost well above that is a watch that will get noticed. I actually got bitched out for wearing a marathon GSAR (military issued watch, I have no need for bullshit) to a meeting.

This is all to say, the places they are trying to sell shit to do not work like where you live. And though we are all solid blue and Democrats, the rest of the US only exists to extract money from flyover land and make us happy. Our liberalism is just about stopping the bible thumpers from getting us in trouble for what we do on the weekend.

Thanks Edward Bernays, father of Consumerism!

Remember folks, the crap you buy makes you the man or woman you are!

Define your personality by the brand of cigarettes you smoke and the detergent you wash your shit-stained undies in!

USA! USA! USA!

What a ridiculous farce. I wonder if you moved away from that area if you'd get your senses back.

Also, minor quibble: It's Nissan/Infinity -- not Lexus. Toyota are the people behind Lexus.

Not that Toyota/Lexus' ads are any better than this.
