Potomac Heights

Whatever your dreams or ambitions, whatever you hope this country can be or hope we can prevent it from becoming, whatever your entirely legitimate beefs with the goofs and weaklings in the Democratic Party, nothing on your wish list will ever get done and everything on your "please, for God's sake at least don't take this away" list will be taken away from you as long as the Republican Party continues to get away with behaving like Carter Hayes from Pacific Heights.

Living inside your government, methodically implementing their plans to, step by step, make it uninhabitable and to drive you out of it.  Ruining your life, bankrupting your country and keeping you out of the voting booth is the plan.  Taking over the wrecked hulk they have created and selling it off piecemeal is the goal:
...
There has been no communication between the White House and House GOP leadership about the coming debt-ceiling discussions, according to Republicans. But ever since Congress granted Obama a short-term extension in January--a move that conservatives supported with the express purpose of strengthening their hand for the next round of negotiations--Republicans have been engaged in intensive preparations for the coming debt-ceiling showdown.

House Speaker John Boehner is now working with several leading conservatives--including Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, and House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin--to draft the options menu.

It is based on what’s known as the Ryan budget, according to Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., a far-right spending plan passed by the House that’s been written off by Democrats as nothing more than a political document that decimates support for the poor and hurts the middle class. And it will outline what Obama will have to agree to for whatever length extension he wants.

For a long-term deal, one that gives Treasury borrowing authority for three and a half years, Obama would have to agree to premium support. The plan to privatize Medicare, perhaps the most controversial aspect of the Ryan budget, is the holy grail for conservatives who say major deficit-reduction can only be achieved by making this type of cut to mandatory spending. "If the president wants to go big, there's a big idea," said Scalise.

For a medium-sized increase in the debt limit, Republicans want Obama to agree to cut spending in the SNAP food-stamp program, block-grant Medicaid, or tinker with chained CPI.
...
Busting up and selling off your America is Republican plan.

Some people believe the best way to thwart that plan is to help Republicans win more elections.

Others disagree.

Either way, no matter what, hating you with the heat of 1,000 suns and working really hard to make sure every day is a very bad day for you will remain their one, unalterable quality.

Constant as the northern star
Of whose true-fixed and resting quality.
There is no fellow in the firmament.

I wish the UUs I've fallen in with would get the fucking memo.

I mean I live in Arizona, for fuck's sake, home of Arpaio and SB1070 and Russell Pearce and Trent Franks, where our legislature is defenestrating Jan Brewer for not killing sick people quick enough.

And I still get a constant dose of "Herp derp I'm sure they mean well, the Democrats are just as bad."

Yes, the Rethugs are in a death spiral at the national level. And hooray for that! State and county level is a Whole. Different. Thing. Witness what is being done at state legislature levels to restrict women's health rights, take voting rights away from brown/black people and deny basic health care to the "poors" by refusing to buy in to Medicaid expansion. This is NO TIME to drop our guard about what they can do to make peoples' lives miserable. They can still do a lot. And will if they can.

Uh, listen here drifty: Barack Obama comes from a community organizing background. Typically, as it is taught now and previously, this means finding all the stake holders for your issue and getting them together to work out an agreement.

The theory is that doing so will encourage previously 'bad actors' into behaving for the greater good of the community.

Well Drifty, what the fuck do you think that looks like on a national political scale?

It looks like working with Tauzin for big Pharma. It looks siding with the national security state on issues of freedom, habeus corpus, and civil liberties.

It looks like letting BP get away with annihilating the Gulf Coast.

It looks like the last administration but technically Obama has reserved a seat at the table for The People but only when convenient.

You seem to think that by belitting critics of the Democratic party you are showing how much better they are than Republicans.

Except you're not: Barack Obama had a 2 year window with congressional super majorities to get things done, and he decided not too.

WAAAAAA REPUBLICANS

My ass. The filibuster can be broken with 50+ Biden, but Obama never went that route, so whatever dysfunction you see is rooted in Barack Obama's foolish desires to work with the people who hate him and the american people.

@anon,

The president has no jurisdiction over the filibuster. That's a senate rule. Harry Reid didn't have the votes to fix it. You have to look at every senator that won't change the rule. At best they had a little over 45 votes. Old folks are in the way.

marindenver gets it precisely. GOP is "in a death spiral" nationally? So fucking what? They're getting their mean malicious agendae enacted in the states. I doubt they really worry about losing THE BATTLE while quietly winning the war...
