Although I am only a casual part-time otaku, I recognized Miku-chan instantly. ^_^

Feed "Japanese mythology" into your favorite search engine and see what you find out about the Shinto pantheon. Our friends in the Land of the Rising Sun have always included surreal elements in their culture.
