This is Not Merely True

It is as grotesquely and self-evidently true as the rabid dog padding down the middle of the dusty road in "To Kill A Mockingbird".

But it's not.

From Krugman:
...
How did American conservatism end up so detached from, indeed at odds with, facts and rationality? For it was not always thus. After all, that health reform Mr. Romney wants us to forget followed a blueprint originally laid out at the Heritage Foundation!

My short answer is that the long-running con game of economic conservatives and the wealthy supporters they serve finally went bad. For decades the G.O.P. has won elections by appealing to social and racial divisions, only to turn after each victory to deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy — a process that reached its epitome when George W. Bush won re-election by posing as America’s defender against gay married terrorists, then announced that he had a mandate to privatize Social Security.

Over time, however, this strategy created a base that really believed in all the hokum — and now the party elite has lost control.

The point is that today’s dismal G.O.P. field — is there anyone who doesn’t consider it dismal? — is no accident. Economic conservatives played a cynical game, and now they’re facing the blowback, a party that suffers from “severe” conservatism in the worst way. And the malady may take many years to cure.
...
So glaringly obvious that it should be merely the stipulated starting point for all political and cultural discussion in America, and yet the overwhelming majority of our media not only denies that the dog is rabid, it denies the dog even exists.

The psychotic implosion of the GOP is the biggest political story of our generation.

And our political press not only actively refuses to cover it, but punishes anyone who tries to force or trick or seduce them into doing so.

That is beyond failure.

That is the definition of conspiracy.

The 1% owns the media. The Dark Side's message would be easily defeated and a reeducation campaign could begin if they reported the truth and they use my fucking air waves to spew their propaganda and mind fuckery.

I disagree the right has been harmed very much if at all. Where they are at is where many others are as well. No changing that and the number will grow because this is where this country continues to go. We are morphing and the media is the reason for that and it is not in a positive direction. Both sides are adamant about their positions and there is no changing minds.

If anyone thinks there will be a bunch of hopey changey after November you are sooo wrong. Not in this toxic environment ever.

Drifty,
As much as I appreciate seeing any part of "To Kill A Mockingbird", what came up for me was not the rabid dog clip but courtroom scenes.
On your post--I think the GOP is too far gone to be salvageable. No moderate can win within it, and no one they nominate can win the general. Independents have nowhere to go. They vote Dem or they sit it out, or they throw away their vote on a vanity third party. If the Dems could get that to translate into down-ballot wins, maybe they could get some things done. I won't hold my breath.

No doubt. The GOP implosion is an absolutely huge story. God how I hope it continues until the job is complete.

Why they don't get it seems to lie in their almost pathological absence of self-awareness.

All I can conclude is they have a classic total sensor defect.

Collectively, wingnuts -from the leaders to followers- are like the pathetic little half breed chihuahua at the holiday party running around dry-humping every fucking ankle that sets still long enough for him to grab.

They're acting out behaviors with origins in a deep fold within the primitive brain, blissfully ignorant their own crudeness.

How else can it be explained other than biological instincts gone completely fucking haywire?

The reason conservatives don't get it is because the right-wing dupes have been lied to for so long they know it is easier to acquiesce and condition themselves into believing the Republican lies.

The Conservative Alternate Reality Matrix has you...

The uselessness of the mainstream media is eclipsing conservative decline as the biggest story. The media is so pathetic, it's not even aware that it should be considered as a resource. It doesn't care when average shmucks with no interns, no nexis, no contacts, and an entirely different full time job can effortlessly run rings around it. The media isn't even aware that true is good.

Actually, I enjoy this dystopia. I like to see stupid people taking themselves out of the gene pool. That they take a few sane one with them... WTF, it's war, isn't it?
