Waits – Hold On

Well go ahead

and call the cops.

In case I’ve never mentioned it, Waits knocks me to my knees. Like Raymond Carver used to do in short stories, Waits takes mangled guts at the low ebbs and margins and transmutes the pain of hookers, junkies, thieves, the used up and the terminally lost into something sacred.

And he's right; you don’t meet nice girls in coffee shops.

Drifty, he blows me away too....and, what a visually stunning video that is....it's like a painting....the music only adds to the visual.

Amazing stuff....thank you for letting us see it and hear it.

Agreed.

I don't think I've ever known anyone whose opinion mattered to me who DIDN'T think Tom Waits was brilliant.

And, on a lighter Tom Waits-themed note, someone over at DU put this together:

Submitted for your amusement. Enjoy.

I love this, it's been in heavy rotation on my player lately, but I hadn't seen the video. Waits is so totally genius, no one but an asshole could not adore him.

I like the Waiting for Godot imagery of him by the tree.

Thanks, driftglass!

OMFSM, Mintrel Boy, that should fill the whole world with horror. I know people think she's lovely and all, but is there any evidence she can actually, you know, sing? And really, you need to be a bit older than 21 or however old she is, to interpret any Waits song, IMO. Having been in a smoky bar on a film set does not count as actual life experience. ;)

Anyone who's into Waits can't be all bad. You both rock.

I saw him at the Auditorium this summer, and at the Chicago in '98 or '99. The Chicago theater show was better than the more recent one, but they both kicked my ass.

from pitchfork media:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/news/39206/Scarlett_Johansson_Recording_Tom_Waits_Covers_Album

According to a recent report on FOXNews.com (yes, that was the sound of a kitten dying) and confirmed by Waits' publicist, aesthetically pleasing and indie-savvy film starlet Scarlett Johansson is not only singing, but recording an album of Tom Waits covers.

Scarlett Sings Tom Waits, as it's called, will tentatively see release next spring via recently-revived Rhino offshoot Atco. It's not Scarlett's first vocal foray-- she recorded a version of Gershwin brothers standard "Summertime" for this year's corny Unexpected Dreams: Songs From the Stars charity compilation.

That's pretty much all the info we have right now, but stayed tuned to Pitchfork, your one-stop ScarJo rumor shop, for more details and the latest hot pix. Oh, and according to Fox News' Roger Friedman, Waits is "one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business." So, best respect-- because lord knows this is, first and foremost, a business

Waits is the best!

Great Blog

I dunno... I'd pay to see Scarlett Johansson do "Pasties and a G-String"...

...but that's just me.

hauntingly beautiful song from a great album. looks like the video may have been filmed near his home in western (rural) Marin county.

So was the guy lying in the backseat whose hand we see at the end the same guy who she was supposedly leaving according to the song?

I know it makes me terribly obtuse, but I don't get it.

Beginning in the early 1970s, some very wonderful Perry and Mike Donze/Ron Anderson Rockford, IL original musicians spread Waits' musical inspiration (at) Southern Illinois Jams, held just five miles west of Carbondale, IL; unforgettable, beautiful, good times.

I guess it shouldn't come as any surprise that Tom Waits socks it to you, too. (And don't I recall you mentioning Firesign Theatre at one point?)

Impeccable taste!
