A clean and VERY well-lighted place…

…and Holy Crap, it’s Milliways!

Or at least one of the fine Milliways Franchises near you.

Further proof (from the Associated Press of all people) that there is a God, and He is Irish…
Study Describes Bar at Center of Milky Way

By RYAN J. FOLEY, Associated Press Writer 35 minutes ago

After creating the most detailed analysis yet of what the Milky Way looks like, astronomers say a long bar of stars cuts on an angle through the center of the galaxy that includes the sun and planet Earth.

Some scientists have suspected the presence of the stellar bar, but the survey led by two Wisconsin astronomers shows the bar is far longer than previously believed, and at a specific angle.

The skinny bar is made up of old and red stars and is about 27,000 light years in length, about 7,000 light years longer than previously believed. The bar is at a 45 degree angle to the line between our Sun and the center of the galaxy and may put the Milky Way in a small class of galaxies with the unusual shape, researchers say.

"We're pretty certain the extent and orientation of this bar because we got more data than anybody else that has ever brought to bear on the problem by a long shot," said Ed Churchwell, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor of astronomy who collaborated on the project.

"We've largely been ignorant of this very major structure in our galaxy for all these years," he said.

Billions of galaxies make up the universe and are mostly spiral or elliptical in shape. Galaxies that have stellar bars cut through the center is rare, but not unheard of, scientists say.

Fools.

The bar is made of mahogany polished to such a subatomically uniform and perfect plane that it absorbs no light at all and disappears into the mosaic of stars that blaze like Chinese Lanterns in every direction.

It is the very spot about which Asimov wrote the seminal “Nightfall”, of which a profoundly crappy movie was made several years ago.

Do not rent the movie.

Go Right Now! and get a copy of the short story (published in 1941, if you can believe it) and learn in a few thousand words of First Rate, Old School Science Fiction all you need to know about Fear, Science, intractable Fundamentalism and human nature.

And most of all -- most timely and cautionary of all -- see exactly how limitless the searing power of reality is to obliterate all of our pretty, petty delusions just by doing what Reality does: Keeping it Very, Very Real.

You want to come to terms with the questions the world will be confronting for the next fifty years? Read science fiction. The good stuff. The old stuff.

Escapist my ass!

The bar…will have a piano, and follow a gentle, sweeping curve almost invisible to the naked eye. It will be Ringworld-large enough to support peat bogs and distilleries from which the best Irish Whiskey in the Universe will be gently coaxed to life.

Utility bills and closing times are not an issue when you’ve staked out a claim at the heart of a solar cluster, and since unlimited fusion energy makes time, energy and raw materials no object…the breakfasts are to die for.

And the jukebox. Ahhh, the jukebox.

Perfect for an intimate rendezvous, or a party of billions.

Make sure you get a stool next to Hemingway: he's full of good stories.

“Nightfall”, BTW, is not only a brilliant story, but Asimov has the supreme self-confidence to begin it with this perfect little jewel by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“If the stars should appear one night in
a thousand years, how would men believe
and adore, and preserve for many generations
the remembrance of the city of God?”

How then, when we sit alone in the dark, shall we know a little of God?

There are a lot of good answers, but among them, in my humble opinion, a cozy bar, a peaty dram and a long night of friends and sparkling conversation comes damned close to good enough.

So why isn't anybody writing this good stuff anymore? They all seem to be writing fantasy stuff which is OK in small doses, really, but its not really Science Fiction at all.
Nice to know there really IS a restaurant at the end of the universe.

That is a fucking beautiful post. It is a rare moment in these times, when I read something beautiful on a political blog. Thank you Driftglass.

Thanks for reminding me that I have to find that old Delany story and re-read it soon.

God invented whiskey so the Irish wouldn't rule the world.

Yeah right, as if without it we wouldn't immediately set about finding some other way to do ourselves in.

I've always liked you Drifty, but I like you even more now that you've held forth on Old Sci Fi. I completely agree and have an excellent collection of the Old Good Stuff. I periodically go on a rampage and re-read a lot of it since it's so much fun, and some of it is so predictive of where we've wound up now.

As to the question of why no one is writing the good stuff any more: Some still are. Mostly Brit authors. For some reason the US has lost interest, but the Brits are keeping it alive. Read Stephen Baxter (expecially Vacuum Drawings) or Alastair Reynolds (The Revelation Space series). Outstanding by any standard.

Oh, and do be sure to read Kaleidoscope Century by John Barnes. Tell me THAT book doesn't say something about where we are. Meme Wars, with memes taking over people's minds - hmmm, believe I've been seeing some of that.

DG-

thanks, brother. I've been feelin' a bit down and this little spot of beauty has lifted me right up. Now I gotta go and dig up some of the old, good stuff and read it again.

Two Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters to go please. And hold the lemon.

The rewrite on Nightfall was bad but still, the original '41 was the best. It's up with old Isaac's best work.

And don't forget Heinlein.

And a perfect story for this political environment as well.

If I had to pick a single favorite writer, for both fiction and non-fiction, I'd have to pick Asimov.

I remember this line from Asimov's "Foundation Trilogy": "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."

Apparently, the Elephascists never read Asimov, or didn't accept his wisdom if they did.

Nice. I may have to take down the office Macallan and salute.
Asimov's amazing. I think there's one Dewey decimal category that does not contain anything written by him. I'm not sure which one. I seem to remember Asimov being a bit surprised at the response Nightfall has had. He never thought it among his best works. Just goes to show how difficult it is to judge ourselves. I still re-read my old Niven from time to time.
There are still a few SF writers out there who can do it right. Iain M. Banks comes to mind. Gene Wolfe, while nudging the borders of fantasy until you get to see a bit more of his "big picture", is tops as well.

Tanbark:

Yeah, so long as it's unadulterated Niven -- no Pournelle for me, please.

And can I add Jack Vance to the list of favorites?

Oh, yeah, and some of my favorite 50's sf: Frederick Pohl and Cyril Kornbluth's collaborations, particularly "Gladiator-at-Law".

Asimov had grand vision but he couldn't write dialogue to save his ass. All his characters sounded like him and all sounded as if they were teaching physics or astronomy or some scientific discipline.

I'd always preferred Heinlein, who was a vastly superior writwer, although there's also something to be said for vintage Bradbury, especially THE ILLUSTRATED MAN.

Anonymous said...

One more, if you want, a must read is Joe Haldeman. An amazing writer and a great guy.

driftglass said...

Well this has been like Old Sci Fi Home week for me. Thank you all for the memories!

All my favorites being lovingly recalled: almost like Farenheit 451 :-)

Asimov for the ideas (you're right, jurassicpork: take away the "said's" and you couldn't tell a man from a woman from a 'bot in an Asimov story.) I have four of his non-fiction books on my shelf just because he was so damned good and entertaining at explaining stuff.

Heinlein for story-telling and craft: Yeah, he leaned Right (hard Right in his dotage) but in his fiction he was always willing to radically experiment with any institution -- government, marraige, identity -- without fear. And, yeah, I think Jubal Harshaw (the best of the "Third Stage Heinlein" characters) would have a whole LOT to say about the "Crazy Years" that we are now smack in the middle of.

Jack Vance, absolutely. And Williamson ("With Folded Hands".)

Pohl. Kornbluth. Sturgeon. Bradbury for the poetry, and Clarke for the Big Ideas. And does anyone still read Cordwainer Smith?

Science Fiction was never predictive per se (so everyone knew we were going to the moon, but nobody predicted it would be televised :-)

But for getting your head ready for what's coming, and finding great ideas and fellow travelers, it remains unparalleled.
